How To Unblock A Drain

Share our post

When it comes to common plumbing problems across Melbourne, the famous blocked drains are definitely up there as one of the most frustrating situations to come home to. Fortunately, we have put together some tips to give you a little more information regarding the causes of blocked drains, and how to unblock them.

Chemical Drain Cleaner

You can look for chemical drain cleaners at your local hardware store. Chemical drain cleaners can be quite effective at removing minor blockages and are capable of dissolving hair, fat deposits, grease, soap debris and other common blockages. Pour the solution into your drain then let it settle for about 15 minutes. Flush the drain with hot water until it flows smoothly and you can no longer smell the chemical solution.

Plunger

For larger blockages, you may need a plunger to clear a blocked drain. The pumping action can dislodge the blockage so that water can flow through once more. To get started, fill the sink, bathtub or other drain areas with enough water to cover the plunger head.

Place the plunger over the drain, ensuring a tight seal on all sides. Pump the plunger up and down to force the water through the pipes. After several thrusts, you should notice that the water begins to drain.

Drain Snake

If the plunger and drain cleaner didn’t work, the next step is to try a drain snake. Basically, this consists of a long coil with a crank. Extend the coil into your drain as far as it will go.

Next, turn the crank for manual snakes, or turn on the power for electric machines. As the coil turns inside the pipe, it will eat through whatever is causing the blockage. Keep feeding the coil through your drain until you no longer feel the blockage in its path.
